Video footage showed two men entering G Houe Tapei in Tawain and throwing over 1,000 roaches and running out. At the time of the roach attack, the restaurant was hosting around 700 people for a meeting of police officers, including Taipei Police Commissioner Chen Jia-chang.
Local authorities investigating the incident, which has closed down the restaurant while it's being cleaned, believe it was carried out by a criminal organization known as Bamboo Union. They also believe it was over a dispute involving an unpaid debt.
The South China Morning Post points out that Bamboo Union is a dangerous mob known for its involvement in drug and human trafficking. Foreign Policy magazine ranked Bamboo Union as one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the world in 2008. Four men and one woman have reportedly been taken into police custody in the incident.
